SUNLITE JS30-MOB: A Futuristic Looking Utility Solar Lamp

When you first see the SUNLITE JS30-MOB, what draws your attention is its hourglass arrangement of the LED lights and the integrated solar panel.

Holding it in your hand, it feels very well built.  The device meets the Lighting Global Minimum Quality standards, and is tested to survive a drop test (to simulate real world usage) amongst many other tests. It can even withstand frequent exposure to rainfall.

It is designed to optimize the collection of light, with a 1.6W, polycrystalline solar panel integrated into its roof. Its flared out (yet compact) base, provides a stable platform for the device and minimizes the table space required.

There are 8 rows of LEDs arranged neatly around the hourglass shaped center column (which is protected by a tough, ultra-violet (UV) light resistant plastic housing), and this makes it an ideal omni-directional lighting device. Depending upon the position of the control switch, the LED’s function in two modes – Super Bright (for an extra dark ambience) and Medium Bright (for moderately dark ambience). The solar lamp can be charged both by solar energy and with electricity from the grid. It provides up to 9 hours and 8.1 hours of light for the two charging modes, respectively.

The solar lamp device has an integrated handle which makes it easy for it be carried around.

Utility Solar Lamp

SUNLITE JS30-MOB can be used as a handheld illumination device, as a tabletop task light and as an overhead light. Its onmi-directional lighting feature allows it to be used for group studying, which is a boon to students and other learners in the rural sectors without access to electricity after dark.

The product also comes with a multi-pin mobile phone charger that can charge several brands of mobile phone. The feature also has a very thoughtful charge limiter, which restricts mobile charging to a maximum of 2 hours of talk time. This ensures that the device’s nickel-metal hydride (ni-mh) battery is not fully drained, and that it can provide 3-4 hours of light even after charging a mobile phone.

Innovation and Price Point

SUNLITE JS30-MOB was the recipient of the aidex 2012 (Global Aid Innovation Challenge) award for its portability and its utility. The device also meets the Lighting Global Minimum Quality standards, and is priced at Rs. 1,800.

The lamp is manufactured by India IMPEX (Mumbai) and has been certified by the Electronics Test and Development Centre (ETDC).

As yet, the product cannot be purchased online, and is only retailed at select outlets.

Tip: For SUNLITE JS30-MOB to work with ambient light, place an opaque object (such as a folded newspaper or a piece of cardboard) to cover its solar panel.
